President's Message, August 13, 2015

I want to take this opportunity, my last as your President, to update you on the events of the past few weeks.  And to say that I look forward to welcoming many of you to Indianapolis and to our Summer Conference.

During this last month, I attended the WAVES Conference in Anaheim, California, where I was able to greet some of you from the Western Region.  As reported on our NASAA website, over 950 SCOs, VA personnel and state leaders attended this largest ever WAVES meeting.  The conference was a great success and afforded me the opportunity to promote the good work you are doing as "the gatekeepers of quality" and "engineers of excellence." I pledged to WAVES, NAVPA (many attended) and state leaders that we would continue to be vigilant on behalf of veterans and their education/training.  And I was honored to accept, on your behalf, the Bill Pearson Service Award.

Now we turn our attention to our own Conference and I wish to commend Vice President Wellman and the Conference Committee, particularly the Indiana SAA team, for the outstanding conference they have planned for us.  We expect well over 110 participants (one of our largest summer conferences), including the American Legion, Student Veterans of America, NAVPA and our VA partners.  There will be training sessions on the challenges we face in oversight and approval, as well as information provided on our communications plan, website use, the VA Contract, our legislative agenda/activities, and of course, new initiatives.  And at our annual awards banquet we will hear from Deputy Undersecretary Curtis Coy and recognize the great achievements of many of you.

I look forward to welcoming you to Indianapolis, where we will elect a new President and leadership team, as well as celebrate the achievements of this past year.  Safe journeys to each of you and I hope to see you soon!

Leaning forward,

Joe Wescott
NASAA President
