Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald addressed NASAA members on Capitol Hill Feb. 9, discussing the partnership between SAAs, NASAA, and DVA in making the GI Bill work well. He spoke during NASAA's Legislative Reception in the U.S. Senate's historic Kennedy Caucus Room.
Also during the reception, NASAA presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.
More than 100 persons attended the reception, part of NASAA’s 2016 Mid-Winter Training and Business Meeting Feb. 6-10. The conference was held at the Crystal City Marriott Hotel in Arlington, VA, with some sessions being held on Capitol Hill in Washington on Feb. 9.
This year’s theme was “Education and Training: The Key to Veteran Success.”
Conference sessions focused on topics related to how State Approving Agencies contribute to veterans’ success through review, approval, and monitoring of school and job training programs.
DVA Deputy Undersecretary for Economic Opportunity Curt Coy delivered the conference keynote address Monday morning, February 8. Also scheduled Monday were a panel discussion on education and training, a report by DVA Education Service Director Rob Worley, and presentations on school approval.
Tuesday's schedule began with the General Session for NASAA members only. That afternoon, members travelled to Capitol HIll for a congressional staff briefing in the Kennedy Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Office Building, preceding the annual Legislative Reception there.
NASAA committees held work sessions Feb. 6 and 7. NASAA’s executive board wrapped up the agenda with a meeting Feb. 10.
