NASAA Recognizes USB Curt Coy

September 26, 2015

President Joe Wescott (NC), left, presents NASAA's Lifetime Leadership Award to VA Deputy Under Secretary Curtis Coy at the Summer Training and Business Meeting in Indianapolis on August 18, 2015.

President Wescott presented the award with these comments:

"The Lifetime Leadership Award is the highest award that NASAA gives to those outside our Association who embody our principles of excellence in service and display bold leadership on behalf of veterans.  The first recipient was Chairman Miller of the House Veterans Affairs Committee in 2014.  This year’s awardee is equally deserving.

I first met Curt Coy almost 4 years ago when I was invited by Under Secretary Hickey to attend a policy round table for For Profit Institutions in Washington DC.  I have never forgotten that meeting and I left Washington thinking here is a man who is not afraid to ask the hard questions and to confront challenges head on.  Over the years that followed, we have worked together to clarify policies, to seek uniformity and to establish a new era of transparency and transformation.  Curt has been insistent on practicality and improved processes.  His focus has been veterans: their education, their employment and their future success.  We have met on numerous occasions at national conferences, we have testified together before Congress and we have even discussed potential changes to best practices in on-line education at Poole’s Diner in Raleigh.

Curt Coy cares deeply for veterans, he understands and values the work and role of state approving agencies and he embodies the principles of bold vision and courageous leadership.  Curt, it is my honor to present you with the 2015 Lifetime Leadership Award."
